LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

On May 19th, I held my Monthly Constituent Coffee at the French Quarter Café. I just wanted to thank those who stopped by to give me their feedback. I hold these monthly coffees in order to stay in touch with fellow residents and listen to their feedback. There is no appointment necessary. Simply stop by and talk to me. I will keep you posted when my next monthly coffee in June will be.

I attended the North Royalton Stadium Foundation’s Press Conference held on May 20th at the North Royalton City Schools Stadium. The North Royalton Stadium Foundation’s sole purpose is to privately raise, with no taxpayer money, the necessary funds to renovate the High School Stadium with state-of-the-art synthetic turf and an eight lane all-weather track. Since 1940 our outdoor stadium has hosted countless soccer, football, band and track events. As you know, our community has grown significantly over the past 70 years, but our stadium has not kept pace with that change and growth. The group unveiled their plans for the project and has begun its’ fundraising campaign. The Stadium Foundation’s goal is to raise $1.4 million before February 2011 thereby allowing the construction of the turf and track to be completed before the 2011 fall sports season. If you would like to assist the NR Stadium Foundation with any fundraising efforts, please contact: NR Stadium Foundation Chairman, Larry Vasil at 440-570-2446. The group also has a website in which you can learn more about the project at www.nrstadiumfoundation.com.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board met on May 10th for its’ May Regular School Board Meeting. Bob Serpentini and Aldo Filippelli were honored as the 2009-2010 Friends of Education. The board approved the North Royalton School District’s Five-Year Strategic Plan. The district will focus on six goals in the areas of community engagement, student
achievement, communication, facilities, financial, and collaboration as outlined by the strategic plan. The board also approved a resolution of support for the capital campaign by the Greater Cleveland YMCA to establish the North Royalton YMCA. In addition the board approved David Vitale to be new Band Director at North Royalton High School. The Board has taken action to begin the bid process for the east stands (visitor’s) and all other site work. The Board has accepted an agreement with Crown Castle for the upfront easement money to help fund the west stands (home).

On May 11th I gave testimony on Senate Bill 210 Healthy Choices, Healthy Children legislation before the Ohio Senate’s Health, Human Services and Aging Committee,
down at the Statehouse in Columbus. I was also joined by representatives from other school districts in the state offering testimony on this pending legislation. As a member of the school district’s Health and Wellness Committee, I have been following this legislation for some time now, because of the potential impact it would have on districts like ours. SB 210 calls for the establishment of nutritional standards for certain foods and beverages sold in public and chartered nonpublic schools; requires public school students to have periodic body mass index measurements; requires daily physical activity for public school students and makes other changes regarding physical education; establishes the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Council. It was great to have the opportunity to testify before the Ohio Senate on this legislation and ensuring that the North Royalton School District’s voice is heard here in Columbus. I hope that the suggestions I proposed before the committee are included in the final draft of SB 210. Substitute versions of the bill are slated to be presented next week, with a possible vote on SB 210 scheduled for Wednesday.

I attended the North Royalton High School Senior Honors and Awards Night on May 11th to present my local scholarship. Since 2005 I have self-sponsored the, “Dan
Langshaw Leadership Scholarship”, a local $300 college scholarship awarded each year to graduating seniors at North Royalton High School that recognizes the achievements of student leaders in the district. I am proud to announce the recipient of the 6th Annual “Dan Langshaw Leadership Scholarship” award is Lindsay Leone. Lindsay plans to attend the University of Akron and major in Chemical Engineering. Again, congrats to Lindsay and all the seniors who received a local scholarship and were recognized for various awards that night. Also special thanks to all those in the community who were generous to donate over $56,000 in scholarships to the district’s graduating high school seniors!

On May 13th I attended the Fourth Annual Retirement Reception for all the teachers and support staff retiring at the end of the school year. I just again want to thank the following for all their years of service in the North Royalton School District: Mary Ellen Chirdon, Grade 4 teacher, Royal View; Leslie First, Family Consumer Science teacher, High School; Rich Golenski, Testing Coordinator, Pupil Services; Doug Hanson, Science teacher, High School; Renee Hoffer, Grade 7 teacher, Middle School; Marty Lydecker, Music Teacher, High School; Jim Mackulin, Custodian, High School; and Chris Studor, Community Information Coordinator for the District. Best of luck on retirement to all of them!

I attended the evening Parent Health and Wellness Academy held at Valley Vista on May 13th. This evening was part of the $2,000 mini-grant the district received a few months ago from the Ohio Department of Education. It was a very fun and informative evening. Those who attended gained valuable knowledge regarding health, fitness, and nutrition. If you ever have a chance there is a great website at www.mypyramid.gov on ways to pack healthy lunches and eat healthy as a family.

On May 14th I was invited to join the ECC Green Team with their planting project as part of their green efforts. It was a fun afternoon working with the little kids, parents, and staff at the ECC.

Testifying on SB 210 before Ohio Senate

I gave testimony today on Senate Bill 210 Healthy Choices, Healthy Children legislation before the Ohio Senate’s Health, Human Services and Aging Committee, in the North Hearing Room of the Statehouse. I was also joined by representatives from other school districts offering testimony on this pending legislation.

I was truly honored having the opportunity to testify before the Ohio Senate this morning and ensuring that the North Royalton School District’s voice is heard here in Columbus. Substitute versions of the bill are slated to be presented next week, with a possible vote on SB 210 scheduled for Wednesday.

Board Update

Good Afternoon:

I just wanted to thank the community for their support of the recent renewal levy for the North Royalton School District. Our schools are a good investment for our children, community, and future. The evidence speaks for itself an “excellent with distinction” rating on the state report card and even national recognition being featured on Forbes.com as one of “America’s 25 Best Schools For Your Housing Buck”.

There are great things happening in our district! I would like to note one of those great things is that the school board at our May 10th board meeting this Monday will be voting to approve the district’s 5-year strategic plan. It has been exciting that over 800 members of our community have taken part in the process drafting the district’s strategic plan and making this truly a successful community/school effort. Our schools belong to our community and all residents should be very proud of what has been accomplished.

I hope and encourage more members of the community to get engaged in the activities of our district. There are many great opportunities to get involved whether it be joining the PTA, attending a school board meeting, supporting our student athletes and events, or giving your input at a (SCENE) school community exchange night for education. Again, thank you all for your continued support of our schools!

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

I attended the City Earth Energy Environment Committee Meeting on May 3rd at North Royalton City Hall as the School Board Representative. The committee discussed the city’s recycling program. The recycling convenience containers have been ordered and should be coming sometime soon. There was also continued discussion on Solar Energy Financing under House Bill 1.

The School Board met on May 4th for its’ Board Work Session and reviewed the May Regular Meeting agenda items, and such other matters before the Board.

May 4th Election Day Results, our district’s renewal levy passed! Thank you all for your continued support of our schools.

North Royalton and Broadview Heights voters pass renewal levy for North Royalton City Schools
By Sara Macho, Sun News

Residents in North Royalton and Broadview Heights have never voted down a North Royalton City School District renewal levy and that tradition continued Tuesday night.
According to final unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, the 6.5-mill levy was passing with 5,081 votes for and 3,670 against with 27 of 27 precincts reported.
“We believe our message was and is as positive as any district in the state,” said Superintendent Ed Vittardi. “Our continued efforts to provide our students an excellent education in a very fiscally responsible manner has been noted by our school community and those even beyond our community lines.”
Taxes will not increase as a result of the renewal and the $6,695,000 per year for the operations, raised will be used to maintain current programs and services.
On May 5th I attended the 2010 Annual Band Banquet, sponsored by the North Royalton Band Boosters. We truly have a great band and so many talented students in it! Congrats to all those who received awards and best of luck to all the graduating seniors!

On May 6th I attended the SCENE meeting and Royal View Art Show. Those of you, who don’t know what SCENE is, it stands for school community exchange night for education, are an informal opportunity to ask questions of the school district administration. Royal View Principal Dr. Lasko highlighted the many great things going on at Royal View Elementary School. Royal View has received the 2010 Blue Ribbon Schools Award Nomination. Royal View students are doing many great things in the areas of citizenship and service learning. Students have done project such as: Hearts for Haiti, Turkey Trot, food drives for the North Royalton Food Bank, and many more to help those in our community and abroad. I would like to also note that Royal View raised over $31,000 through private fundraising efforts with the help of the PTA, box tops, and Campbell soup labels to purchase SMART Boards for every classroom and make technology improvements at no cost to taxpayers. Superintendent Vittardi gave a brief update on things going on in the district such as strategic plan, and various other great things going on in the district as we approach the end of the school year.
