Greetings Ward 3 Resident,

Today July 4th marks the 241st birthday for our nation. For generations we as Americans have been blessed to live freely. It is easy to forget sometimes the true meaning behind Independence Day. Benjamin Franklin said it best “Where liberty dwells, there is my country.” A big reason why we are a free is because of the sacrifices made by our brave men and woman in the US Military. So today if you see a veteran or a service member in uniform, thank them for their service.

As City Council approaches its’ upcoming summer recess in August there are still a number of things going on in your City Government to update you on below.

Rumpke Rubbish & Recycling Holiday Schedule Reminder
In observance of Independence Day, Rumpke trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day the rest of the week of July 4th. This means Tuesday to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday, Thursday to Friday and Friday to Saturday. Rumpke will resume its normal schedule the week of July 10th. If you have any questions, please call Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171.

Council Update

Highlights from Council Meetings
Some highlights from the City Council Meetings for June. Council approved Ordinance 17-85 accepting the of Cavanaugh Building Corporation for the Chippewa Headwaters Park Project. Council approved Ordinance 17-77 accepting the bid of Baumann Enterprises to demolish old city hall. Council also approved Ordinance 17-78 the bid of Specialized Construction Inc. for the 2017 asphalt pavement rehabilitation for Tibly Road.

Building & Building Codes Committee
The Building & Building Codes Committee had continued discussion on my proposal for legislation to address perpetual yard sales that are causing blight and safety issues in the city. I am in the process of drafting formal legislation and hope to have it on the Council agenda for mid July. Read More.

Finance Committee
The City Council Finance committee has been discussing Ordinance 17-84 to put an EMS levy on the November Election ballot. This would replace the old 1.7 mills EMS levy which costs the owner of a $200,000 home approximately $5 per month, and replace it with a new 1.7 mill that at today’s costs would increase that monthly cost by almost $5, for a total of about $10. This would generate an additional $630,000 annually, a total of $1.4 million, for the department. As a result House Bill 920 and the most recent state budget that was passed by the Ohio General Assembly the state funding cuts continue to get worse and impact our community. This EMS levy is vital to maintaining this important service to our community. Read More.

Old City Hall Update
City Council approved the bid of Baumann Enterprises to demolish the old city hall building sometime by the end of this summer. Read More.

Senior Transportation Change
If you are a Senior in need of transportation for a medical appointment, group grocery shopping or a North Royalton Senior Center approved activity after July 3, 2017, you now need to call the STC (Senior Transportation Center) Call Center to schedule, and their number is 216-265-1489.

2017 City Road Program Update
The bids came in for the road resurfacing project for Tilby Road. Initially, it was believed this would be our only fully resurfaced street this year, but because the project was significantly under the budget estimate the city is will also be going to bid out for Royalhaven Drive and Parkdale Drive to be done this year too. Cedar Estates Regional Basin Project
This project is the last remaining project that the City planned to undertake as part of the $5 million capital project list that began back in 2007/2008.  This project when completed will help relieve erosion and flooding issues downstream along Baldwin Creek in the Cedar Estates area.  Construction has began back in May and is being done by DiGioia Suburban Excavating.  Currently the northern basin the larger of the two is being excavated.  The outlet and equalization pipes are being set and headwalls being formed. Please use caution when driving in this area of York Road between Tilby Road and Sprague Road as trucks are entering and exiting the roadway from the project site on the west side of York Road.

Sidewalk Grant
The city recently received good news from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency that it has been awarded $108,000 grant through a Transportation for a Livable Communities Grant to install sidewalk from City Hall to RT 82 along State Road. Increasing connectivity in our city has been something I have been advocating for the last few years. I think this a good first step in doing that. Read More.

Support for the Taylor & Pifer Families
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Taylor and Pifer families on the tragic loss of Suzanne, Taylor, and Kylie on June 10^th. Thank you to all the neighbors, community members, and all those who have been so supportive of these families during this time tough time. I especially want to thank the North Royalton Police Department, BCI, FBI, and all the law enforcement agencies that worked around the clock to quickly capture their suspected killer and will ensure that he is brought to justice for his crimes. What happened to those ladies was a result of evil in the world we live in and by a monster. This unfortunately can happen anywhere. The community vigil and their memorial services shows that there is much more good in this world and evil will never win! Click Here to learn more.

Ward 3 Recycling Tip of the Month
First things first, a little R & R & R. The aphorism is so tired it almost might seem like “reduce, reuse, recycle” should go without saying. Most of us have only really heard the last third of the phrase, and they’re ranked in order of importance, but there are several steps we should consider before recycling. Reducing the amount that we consume, and shifting our consumption to well-designed products and services, is the first step. Finding constructive uses for “waste” materials is next. If it’s broken, fix it don’t replace it! If you can, return it to the producer (especially electronics). Or better yet – don’t by any packaged goods! Tossing it in the blue bin should be last. (The garbage can is not on the list, for good reason.) Through a balance of these three principals you can easily see your landfill-destined waste dwindle fast. A good example of recycling is setting your empty water bottles in the bin on the curb. But by using a water filter and reusable container you can reduce or completely eliminate your need for disposable plastic bottles.

Reminder to Keep Ditches Clear of Debris
With the recent rains that we have had in our community, it is important to remember your responsibility as a homeowner to keep all ditches, swales and drainage ways on your property “free and clear”.  Failure to keep these areas unobstructed can result in flooding in areas not intended to flood. Remove leaves, twigs and garbage from ditches that may obstruct the flow of storm water so that the water can travel along it’s intended path. Most importantly city ordinance requires this. Join us on Saturday, July 8^th from 10:00am – 2:00 pm at Discount Drug Mart, 5500 Walling Road The Royalton Hills Lions and Discount Drug Mart are hosting our annual Salvation Army “Christmas in July” event. We will be selling Krispy Kreme donuts, grilling hot dogs, selling chips and soda all to raise funds for our local Salvation Army Service Unit to help those less fortunate with school clothes and utility disconnects in our community. Our infamous boy’s scouts are returning to wash up your vehicle I believe I might have heard a little rumor about a jolly old fella whose belly shakes like a bowl full of jelly planning a visit and bringing the Mrs. with him too! So bring those checkbooks, dirty cars and empty bellies and enjoy the morning. Click Here for more information.

Operation North Royalton Cares Program Kick-Off Event
Operation North Royalton Cares Program will Kick-Off with an Event on July 18th from 5:00pm-7:00pm at The 3 Spot located at 13855 Ridge Road here in North Royalton. The entire community is invited to come enjoy a FREE sampling of light appetizers. The only request is that everyone who attends the Kick-Off Event bring at least 3 school supplies or more in support of Operation North Royalton Cares Program.

2017 Operation North Royalton Cares Program
The Eighth Annual Operation North Royalton Cares Program will run from July 18th through August 11th. The mission of Operation North Royalton Cares is to collect basic school supplies for families of students in need in the North Royalton School Community. The program is supported by the North Royalton City School Community, North Royalton YMCA in coordination with the City of North Royalton Office on Aging & Human Services.

Items in high demand this year include backpacks, wide-ruled notebooks and paper not college-ruled, dry-erase markers and erasers, red pens, USB flash drives, TI-100 calculators and gift cards in any amount to stores like Target, Walmart, Giant Eagle, CVS, Drug Mart, Office Max, Staples, Rite Aid etc.

A full wish list of supplies include backpacks, folders with and without pockets, pencils, pencil boxes, markers, glue and glue sticks, highlighters, headphones (no earbuds), USB flash drives, black and blue pens, red pens, rulers, protractors, colored pencils, tissue boxes, wide-ruled notebooks and paper, crayons, scissors, index cards, three-ring binders, washable markers, Sharpie markers, dry-erase markers and erasers, the TI-100 calculators and hand sanitizer.

School supply donations can be dropped off at the designated purple and gold boxes at the following locations (More Locations to come):
