Ward 3 E-Newsletter: November 2017

Greetings Ward 3 Resident,

I hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween. Although the holiday season is close upon us, things continue to remain relatively busy here in city government as we start to prepare the 2018 city budget and deal with mother nature too. Before I get into my update for this month, I have a few quick reminders/update.

Sunday Storm Update
Overnight Sunday November 5th our city got the brunt of the storm that caused power outrages, road closures, down trees, and other storm debris. Also the Fire Department had over 60 calls for service which included some medical calls and a structure fire. A big thank you to all our First Responders and Service Department for all they did last night and continue to do for the storm clean up! Now that the storm has ended Ward 3 residents here is some important information listed below that may help you:

Down Trees & Storm Debris
If you have down trees or storm debris not effecting power lines or any structural damage please contact the Service Department at 440-582-3002 for assistance.

Down Power Line Issues
If you have down power line issues please contact the Fire Department immediately so they can address these hazards as soon as they are identified at 440-237-4315.

Power Outages
The last I have checked all the power that was out in Ward 3 was restored around midnight and 2:30am this morning. If you still do not have power please contact First Energy at 1-888-544-4877 to report the power outage. You can also report outages and get updates from First Energy at http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/oh.html

If there are any other issues you can contact me at ward3@northroyalton.org or 440-785-4240.

Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best “Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting”. The following places are polling locations for Ward 3 residents:

North Royalton United Methodist Church

Council Update

Highlights from Council Meetings
Some highlights from the City Council Meetings for October.  Council approved Ordinance 17-114 an ordinance authorizing the mayor to submit an application in the amount of $121,000 to the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency to seek funding to extend the multi-use asphalt path on Bennett Road, from Route 82 to South Akins Road down to Valley Parkway. This would tie it into the Metroparks All-Purpose Trail to improve connectivity in the city as indicated in the City’s Alternative Transportation Study. Read More. Council voted down by a vote of 1-6 my Ordinance 17-101 an ordinance that would have prohibited medical marijuana cultivators, processors, and retail dispensaries within the City of North Royalton. Although I was unsuccessful I respect the fact that Council had a vote on my legislation, and the overwhelming majority, by voting it down, made it clear that medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivators should be allowed in the city of North Royalton. Once the current moratorium ends on March 31, 2018, it will officially be legal in our city. Read More. Council approved Ordinance 17-115 an ordinance requesting assistance from Cuyahoga County to replace the Abbey Rd bridge near the Sprague Rd intersection. Read More.

Finance Committee
City Council will start reviewing the 2018 City Budget soon. I will keep you posted as we start the process.

EMS Replacement Levy Issue #34
Tomorrow November 7th is Election Day.  Please make sure you vote all the way down your ballot because there are many candidates and issues that need your vote too. A very important issue on the ballot here in North Royalton is Issue #34 the EMS replacement levy which I especially like to urge for your support. The North Royalton Emergency Medical Service levy property tax rate has not changed since 1993. Since then the costs for providing this vital service has increased by over $3 million dollars annually. The EMS replacement levy will replace the current 1.7 mill EMS levy with a new 5-year levy at the same 1.7 mill rate, but updated at today’s property values back to the original intended amount that voters in early 1990s passed that has been lost to inflation, population growth, cuts in state aid, and House Bill 920. The EMS replacement levy is needed because our emergency responses have more than doubled with 1,171 runs in 1993 vs. 2,395 in 2016. Due to this increased activity costs have increased for staffing and equipment. The cost of the levy to a homeowner with a $200,000 home will be an additional $4.76 per month or $57.12 per year if the replacement levy is approved. No one expects to have a medical emergency that’s why it is called an emergency. When a loved one, neighbor, or even you has an emergency you want to get the best care and fast. If this replacement levy is not approved it will have a direct negative impact on the residents of our city. So please help us maintain this vital service to ensure that all our families continue to get the best care in the time of an emergency by voting in support of Issue #34 the EMS replacement levy! If you have any question please feel free to contact me directly at 440-785-4240 or via email at ward3@northroyalton.org. If you like to read my recent Letter to the Editor about Issue #34 Click Here or check out this recent article covering the importance of the levy by Clicking Here.

Auditor of State Award
Recently our city received the Auditor of State Award which is presented to local governments and school districts, upon the completion of a clean financial audit, that have filed a timely financial report with the state auditor’s office. This award means the audit report did not contain any findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, single audit findings or questioned costs. Great job to our Finance Director and his department for all their hard work to earn such an award. Read More.
