The Board had its’ March Regular School Board Meeting on March 8th. The Board recognized the achievements of three teachers in the district. Tony Kleem NRHS Social Studies teacher, was recognized for his noteworthy work in the area of art. Tony’s puzzles and artwork have been purchased not only locally but internationally. Susan Finelli, Valley Vista 4th grade teacher, was recognized for her recent publication, Life’s Amusement Park . Her book has recently received a Mom’s Choice Award. Stacey Leatherman, NRHS Language Arts teacher, was recognized for her publication of poems, Stranger Air. Stacey is a recognized poet receiving a MFA from Vermont College. On March 10th I attended the Ohio School Board Association’s State Legislative Conference in Columbus. It was great to hear discussion from the panel from the School Funding Advisory Council, which was composed of state representatives, Ohio Education Association, and individuals from other districts. They discussed key issues that effect educational funding here in Ohio and the new Evidence Based Model. There was a good question and answer session with key lawmakers about current legislation being introduced in Columbus. While in Columbus I took the time to meet with our representatives in the Ohio General Assembly in both the House and Senate. I was able to pass along concerns regarding current legislation such as HB 400, SB 8, HB 373, and other education related issues.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

On February 16th I had the honor of introducing myself to the members of the North Royalton Middle School PTA at their monthly meeting. It was nice hearing about all the great work they are doing for our students and staff. A few of the parents raised some very good questions to me and I hope through the district’s strategic planning process that those issues can be addressed. I have now officially visited every PTA in the District and have really learned a lot from attending these meetings.

Renewal Levy

Last night the Board took action to place a renewal levy on the May 4, 2010 ballot. This renewal levy will not increase taxes. This levy is a combination of two issues, the first of which was passed in 1990 and was last renewed in 2005. The levy will continue to raise $6,695,000 annually. Please know this renewal levy will not increase taxes and passage is vital to allow our district to maintain current programs and services.
