Board Update

Good Evening:

This Thursday, April 21st from 6pm-8pm Broadview Heights Mayor Sam Alai and I will be co-hosting a Special Coffee for Broadview Heights residents who live in the North Royalton School District on at the Coffee Club located 500 E. Royalton Rd. #150 in Broadview Heights. I hold these monthly coffees in order to stay in touch with fellow residents and listen to their feedback one on one. For this month I would like to hear from Broadview Heights residents in the North Royalton School District. All those who attend will be treated to a free small coffee. There is no appointment necessary. You may also contact via e-mail if you wish at dan.langshaw@northroyaltonsd.org or call 440-596-0078. In May my Monthly Constituent Coffee will return back to the French Quarter Café as normal.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board met on April 11th for its’ April Regular School Board Meeting. Some highlights from the meeting. The board had several guest. There is much more fundraising to be done, but the North Royalton Stadium Foundation was present to present the Board with a in the amount of $1 million dollars for the Stadium Project. The Board also offered its’ thanks to the Foundation for all their hard work so far to reach this major milestone! A representative from the Ohio School Board Association presented School Board Member Cheryl Hannan with the OSBA Award of Achievement. The Board approved appropriations adjustments in Title I and II funds. The Board recognized Carmen Rademaker as Teacher of the Year and Bryan Sheffield as Support Staff Person of the Year. In addition the Board recognized Jim Smith and Larry Vasil as the 2010-2011 Friends of Education. The Board approved resolution declaring appreciation weeks, Administrative Professionals Week (April 24-30, 2011) and Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week (May 2-7, 2011). Superintendent Vittardi announced the next SCENE meeting, will be Wednesday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at the North Royalton High School Community Room. The meeting will be devoted to an overview of the state budget cuts and its impact on the North Royalton school district. The Board also approved various leaves of absence, and accepted resignations/retirements. Board approved a number of appointments for: continuing contracts for certificated licensed employees, limited contracts for certificated/licensed employees, and limited contracts for certificated/licensed small group instructors for the 2011-2012 school year. The Board approved a service agreement with Parma Community General Hospital for the services of a certificated, licensed athletic trainer for the 2011-2012 school year and for additional athletic trainer services during the fall season in the amount of $10,800.00. Also the Board approved the April 2011 policy updates. The Board approved a resolution authorizing the Assistant Superintendent, Treasurer, and Superintendent of schools to sign change orders on the stadium and bus garage projects. I would like to note that under section 1 of the resolution “all change orders over $20,000 will presented to the Board of Education for its consideration”. Board approved a resolution enhancement to the scoreboard at the stadium at the high school and related improvements and installation work are available from a single source and authorizing the expenditure of an amount not to exceed $50,000. The Board approved also various other agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board. The Board also went into a brief Executive Session for the purpose to discuss the employment of personnel.

North Royalton Spring Food Bank Distribution
On April 16th I volunteered at the North Royalton Food Bank to help with the annual Spring Food Box distribution. I just wanted to personally thank all those in our community who have donated food, money, and various items for Easter Baskets to needy children and families. We are so lucky to live in a community, that values helping those in the greatest of need during these tough economic times!

Governor John Kasich’s Budget Proposal is a devastating funding loss to the North Royalton City School District to the tune of almost $5 million dollars in the next biennium budget. When I testified back on April 7th I stressed to lawmakers that we oppose HB 153 and urge the legislature to focus on including some form of cap on the percentage reduction that any district must endure in this biennium budget. Currently we face a 38.11% reduction in state funding under HB 153. If you haven’t seen the recent news articles about the budget and its’ impact on our district please check out these links:

May SCENE Meeting
How will the proposed governor’s budget impact North Royalton City Schools? Governor Kasich’s Budget Proposal Would Cost North Royalton City Schools almost 5 Million Dollars in the next Biennium Budget. Our district will take a devastating hit from the Governor’s budget if nothing of significance changes. Please encourage your neighbors and friends to attend this very important meeting.
