Ward 3 E-Newsletter: August 2017

Greetings Ward 3 Resident,

Wow the summer is going by fast. It is hard to believe it is already August. Before you know it will be back to school time for the kids. Just a reminder there still is time to donate to the Annual Operation North Royalton Cares Program, which runs till August 9th. The mission of Operation North Royalton Cares is to collect basic school supplies for families of students in need in the North Royalton School Community. The program is supported by the North Royalton City School Community, North Royalton YMCA in coordination with the City of North Royalton Office on Aging & Human Services. Save The Date

Ward 3 Picnic in the Park Event
Back by popular demand. I will be hosting again a Ward 3 Picnic in the Park Event on September 2nd from 1-3pm at Memorial Park Pavilion #2 located at 14600 State Rd in North Royalton. In the case of rain the event will be held inside the community room at city hall. I invite all North Royalton Ward 3 residents & their families to come out to enjoy a fun afternoon in the park. Filled with FREE food, games, and a chance to meet fellow neighbors too. Fire Truck Pizza Company will be serving up their famous pizza. Special appearance by the North Royalton Fire Department for the kids. All those who attend are encouraged to make a donation at the event to help support a local hometown charity of John Owen’s Adventure (JOA), which is working hard to raise awareness for Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy and other chronic childhood illnesses. They are also working to develop funds for finding a cure, sustaining the quality of life for these affected children and educating the general public about such illnesses. Council Update

Highlights from Council Meetings
Some highlights from the City Council Meetings for July. Council approved Resolution 17-84 putting a 1.7 mill EMS levy on the November 7th Ballot. This levy would replace the levy passed in 1988 of 1.2 mills and the .50 levy passed in 1993. Read More. Council approved Ordinance 17-90 accepting the bid of Specialized Construction for the asphalt pavement rehabilitation program 2017. Council also approved Resolutions 17-87 and 17-88 confirming the Mayor’s appointments for a new patrol officer and promotion of another officer to Sargent in the Police Department. Read More.

City Update


Old City Hall Update
On July 11th the old city hall was demolished. It served our city well for over 80 years till it couldn’t serve no more. I look forward to seeing this site redeveloped so that all residents can enjoy it and our city green for generations to come! Read More.

2017 City Road Program Update
This year’s road program includes rehabbing Tilby Road, Parkdale Drive, and Royalhaven Drive. Work is expected to begin on August 7. The Service Department is also working on cracking sealing roads throughout the city too. I have requested a number of streets/roads in Ward 3 to be on their list of road repairs. If there are any additional areas in need of repair please email me the location at ward3@northroyalton.org. Ward 3 residents who live near Buntingtree Condos a private contractor will be doing road repairs to a portion of Washington Ave near the York Road entrance sometime in August. Read More.

Chippewa Creek Headwater Wetlands Park Project Update
Cavanaugh Building Corp was awarded the contract for the Chippewa Creek Headwater Wetlands Park project that is on the city-owned property between the YMCA and library. Construction to hopefully be completed by this year. Read More.

Cedar Estates Retention Basin Project Update
The Cedar Estates Retention Basin Project is well underway and on schedule. This project is the last remaining project that the City planned to undertake as part of the $5 million capital project list that began back in 2007/2008. Currently the northern basin (the larger of the two) is being excavated. The outlet and equalization pipes are being set and headwalls being formed.Please use caution in this area of York Road between Tilby Road and Sprague Road as trucks are entering and exiting the roadway from the project site on the west side of York Road. New City & UH Partnership for Senior Center
The Mayor recently announced a new partnership with University Hospitals to manage the city senior center which will help enhance health and wellness programs for seniors. Read More.


2017 Operation North Royalton Cares Program

The Eighth Annual Operation North Royalton Cares Program will run from July 18th through August 9th. The mission of Operation North Royalton Cares is to collect basic school supplies for families of students in need in the North Royalton School Community. The program is supported by the North Royalton City School Community, North Royalton YMCA in coordination with the City of North Royalton Office on Aging & Human Services.

Items in high demand this year include backpacks, wide-ruled notebooks and paper not college-ruled, dry-erase markers and erasers, red pens, USB flash drives, TI-100 calculators and gift cards in any amount to stores like Target, Walmart, Giant Eagle, CVS, Drug Mart, Office Max, Staples, Rite Aid etc.

A full wish list of supplies include backpacks, folders with and without pockets, pencils, pencil boxes, markers, glue and glue sticks, highlighters, headphones (no earbuds), USB flash drives, black and blue pens, red pens, rulers, protractors, colored pencils, tissue boxes, wide-ruled notebooks and paper, crayons, scissors, index cards, three-ring binders, washable markers, Sharpie markers, dry-erase markers and erasers, the TI-100 calculators and hand sanitizer.

School supply donations can be dropped off at the designated purple and gold boxes at the following locations (More Locations to come):

Those who wish to make monetary donation can make checks payable to the Charitable Fund of North Royalton Kiwanis. The words “school supplies” should be written in the memo section of the check. Community Food Bank in Need of Donations
The Food Bank shelves are looking sparse, please help our local Food Bank Partnership (Royal Redeemer/Kiwanis/City of North Royalton). Here is a list of the most needed items: Cereal, Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Chunky Soup, Mac-n-Cheese, Tuna, Tuna Helper, Rice or Instant Potatoes, Spaghetti Sauce, Pasta, Pancake Mix, and Syrup. Christmas in July Event
On July 8th participated in the City of North Royalton Office on Aging & Human Services and Royalton Hills Lions Christmas in July Event that helps support the North Royalton Salvation Army Unit. I enjoyed wearing the big red suit and supporting this great cause! Thank you to all those who made this event a success! Read More.


Best Wishes!
It was great to get interviewed on July 28th by James Sinclair so he could get his First Class Rank for Boy Scouts. He had some good questions for me about what I do serving on City Council and things going on in our city. I think he especially liked being North Royalton Ward 3 Councilman for a few minutes! Best wishes to him in obtaining his new rank and special thanks for all the great things he is doing to help our community through the Boy Scouts!

Sewer and Water Billing Change FYI
Just a reminder residents will be getting a combined monthly water and sewer bill. Also residents will just get a quarterly bill for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer Districts’ Stormwater Management Fee instead of a monthly bill. Read More. Help for Veterans & Their Families
Cuyahoga Community College is hosting an event at its’ Western Campus located at 11000 Pleasant Valley Road in Parma. August 10th-12th for veterans and their families to learn how to claim benefits.Parking is free. Click Here to learn more.


Ward 3 Recycling Tip of the Month
Drop off your old varnishes, fertilizers, cleaners, fluorescent bulbs, and other items that can’t go into a landfill at the Service Yard, 11545 Royalton Rd. Collection is year round from 8:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays. You can bring oil-based paint, but NO LATEX PAINT.

North Royalton Community Festival Parade
North Royalton Community Festival Parade is on August 20th Steps off at 3:00pm from St. Albert the Great and proceeds down Ridge Rd. to the North Royalton High School.

North Royalton Band Boosters Fill the Truck Event
North Royalton Band Boosters will partner with Easter Seals Northern Ohio to not only raise money for the North Royalton Marching Band, but also to help local children and adults with disabilities. An Easter Seals truck will be parked west of the North Royalton Board of Education offices at 6579 Royalton Road Friday, August 18th from 4:00pm to 9:00pm (during the Marching Band Parent/Family and Friends preview night), Saturday, August 19th from 10:00am until 6:00pm, and Sunday, August 20th from 1:00pm to 6:00pm (during the North Royalton Community Festival). Donations being accepted clothing, blankets, towels, shoes, purses, stuffed animals, cloth lunchboxes, backpacks, even stained items can be recycled. (All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a receipt when you drop off your items).
