Cuyahoga County Plastic Bag Ban
I have gotten some questions recently from residents and wanted to provide as much information on can on the Cuyahoga County Plastic Bag Ban. The Cuyahoga County Council has delayed enforcement of their ban on single-use plastic bags until July 1, 2020. The ban was scheduled to take effect January 1, 2020, but County Council has passed legislation for this grace period after realizing that businesses and residents need more time to adjust to this change. Some business locally have already made the change and some grocery stores like Giant Eagle plan to make the change in the beginning of the new year.

What Does the Ban Cover?

Stores covered by the bag ban:

  • Retail stores of all types
  • Convenience stores
  • Grocery stores and supermarkets
  • Shops
  • Service stations
  • Drug stores

Except when used for:

  • Curbside pick-up or delivery
  • Prepared foods
  • Packaging bulk items or perishables (such as meat, fish, produce, baked goods, flowers)
  • Prescription medications
  • Prescription medications provided by a pharmacist

Exemptions

  • Dry cleaners who only use for dry cleaning items; others are not exempt
  • Restaurants (unless for grocery items)
  • Bakeries

The bag ban does not extend to bags used for leftovers, prepared foods, bulk items or perishables such as meat, fish, produce, baked goods and flowers. It does not cover bags sold for use for garbage, yard waste or pet waste. Click Here for more information or call 216-443-7000.
