WARD 3 MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER: June 2013

Greetings Ward 3 Resident,

Summer is officially here! For the last few months I have been going door to door throughout our ward to personally introduce myself. It has been great meeting so many ward 3 residents and to get their feedback. If I haven’t made it to your door yet, I look forward to meeting you soon as I plan to continue to walk the whole ward the next several months.

Something I have learned in my visits at resident’s doors is that folks like a chance to get to know their neighbors better. Too often many of us are so focused on our daily routines, rushing to take kids to an after school event, or are just glued to our computers; that we don’t take the time anymore to really interact with our fellow neighbors.

As your City Councilman I would like to change that, which is why I like to announce that I will be hosting a Ward 3 Summer Ice Cream Social on July 28th from 2-4pm at the St. Matthew Orthodox Church Pavilion located at 10383 Albion Rd., North Royalton, OH 44133. All North Royalton Ward 3 residents are invited to attend. Come out and enjoy a fun afternoon filled with great music by DJ Vince, FREE ice cream, and a chance to meet some of your fellow neighbors too. All those who attend are asked to bring one non perishable can food item to help support the North Royalton Food Bank. Event will happen rain or shine. For more information please contact me by email at ward3@northroyalton.org or call me at 440-785-4240.

Have a great weekend!

COUNCIL UPDATE

Some highlights from the June City Council Meetings. Council approved a bid for road salt for the 2013-2014 season. Adopted alternative tax budget information for the city for the fiscal year beginning January 1, 2014 and submitting it to the county auditor. Approved a city health risk assessment/wellness program for city employees. Approved an ordinance for the issuance and sale of bonds to pay for the cost for improving Edgerton Road and installing a water main.

Finance Committee got an update on the city’s monthly budget and tax collections. In May the city was up $600,000 over last May and $800,000 over last year at that time. The consensus of the committee was to keep within the current city budget.

Streets Committee got an update on the 2013 Road Rehabilitation Program which will focus on the rehabilitation of Patricia, Gardenside, Valley Lane and the North Royalton Cemetery. Bids were opened last week for the project. A recommendation will be made and then Council will accept a contract to be entered into with the lowest and best bidder. Then construction will begin as soon as possible after that is done.

CITY UPDATE

Safety Reminder from the North Royalton Police Department about Fireworks
As we begin the summer months and with the July 4th holiday quickly approaching the Police Department routinely begins to receive numerous complaints of illegal fireworks being set off throughout the city. After the July 4th holiday we have historically seen this behavior continue throughout the summer. Even with the best of intentions, accidents can happen. Fireworks have the potential to cause serious injury or death. When we experience dry weather in early spring and summer fireworks pose an even greater risk of starting grass or structure fires. An additional concern is the disruption of the peace caused by the noise created by fireworks. Last year the North Royalton Police Department adopted a Zero Tolerance Policy regarding the illegal possession and discharge of fireworks. We will continue to take this stance again this year. Illegal possession or discharge of fireworks is a first degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail as well as a fine of up to $1,000. That being stated, any person found to be in violation of this ordinance will be issued a citation. While it may be legal to purchase fireworks in Ohio, you also have to sign an affidavit stating you are taking those fireworks out of the State of Ohio within a certain time frame. As a safe alternative we would encourage residents to plan ahead to attend one of the many professional fireworks displays that will be done throughout our area. We want our residents to have a great summer in a safe way and be considerate of your neighbors.

Rumpke Holiday Schedule
In observance of Independence Day July 4th, Rumpke trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day. When a holiday falls on a weekday, service will be delayed by one day for that entire week through Saturday. So next week, Monday through Wednesday collections will occur as normal. But, residents whose normal trash day is Thursday, which also happens to be Independence Day, will have their garbage picked up on Friday, July 5 instead. Residents whose trash day is normally Friday, will put their trash bins out on the curb for pick up Saturday, July 6. Rumpke will revert to the regular pick up schedule that following week. If you have any questions, please call Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171. Also below is a recent newspaper story about the holiday trash and recycling collection that you might find helpful too:

Sprague Road Closure
Sprague Road will be closed for approximately forty days beginning June 18th. The closure will take place between Hoertz Road and Broadview Road. All traffic will be diverted to Pleasant Valley Road in Parma. The detour is due to the construction of sanitary sewer lines in Broadview Heights and Parma. When completed later this year, Sprague Road will be resurfaced between State Road and Broadview Road.

AROUND WARD 3

Special Congrats!
Congrats to North Royalton High School Senior Irene Vitakis for being the Winner of the 2013 Dan Langshaw Leadership Scholarship! Best of luck at the University of Toledo!!!!!

Building Code Violations/Vacant Homes
As your Councilman I get weekly reports from the Building Department on various violations by Ward 3 property owners; that city building inspectors have found during their inspections. A common violation I am still seeing is violations of non-compliance with Section 660.14(a) (b) (c) (d) of the Codified Ordinance of North Royalton titled “Weeds and Grass”. A majority of these properties appear to be either vacant or in foreclosure. If you know of any properties like this in our ward, please let me know by e-mailing me at ward3@northroyalton.org with the address. I want our ward looking nice, but most importantly want to ensure resident safety with any vacant or foreclosed home that may be around our ward.

Cleveland Water Changes
I have been contacted by a few residents, who had received some notices from Cleveland Water that they thought were a scam. I ended up investigating and it was not a scam. So please take a moment and click on the link below for information regarding Cleveland Water’s new Project called Clear Reads.

http://www.clevelandwater.com/clearreads/index.aspx

Participation in the Clear Reads Project is mandatory for all Cleveland Water customers. Meters for all customers, residential and business, will either be replaced or modified at NO COST to customers.

Also here is a link to a newspaper story that explains some other changes that Cleveland Water is making that you need to be aware of as well:
