SINCE MY LAST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

The School Board met on November 15th for a Board Work Session. The Board discussed the results of the recent bond issue. The district will be having a private research firm conduct a scientific poll by phone starting sometime in January to see what residents liked and did not like about the bond issue to better gauge public opinion on this issue. Board got an update on All Day Kindergarten and the district is exploring the possibility of the viability of adding another class for it at the ECC. Board got an update on the district’s transportation needs and ways it could possibly save more money in operations. The district is looking to do a possible pilot program with the North Royalton Athletic Boosters in which the boosters would pay for middle school students to attend for free to middle school games as a way to increase school spirit. Curriculum Director Bruce Bradley gave the board an update on the progress being made in technology in the school district. The high school is now completely wireless and the hope is to have the entire district wireless as well to additional opportunities for teachers to allow students to bring their own devices i.e. smart phones, ipads, tablets, and etc. and use them for education purposes in the classroom. The teachers in the school district have already undergone training regarding bring your own device and some will be starting to utilize them in their classrooms. The district also plans to invest more into technology due to increases in state standards and will use permanent improvement dollars to do it. Board reviewed the school calendar and 5 year forecast. The board was given an update on the repairs needed for the Valley Vista Elementary Boiler and what the board’s possible options could be after cost estimates are done. Board had discussion about the possibility of having advertising on the back of the district’s school buses as a means of new revenue. Board requested to get more information on it and if current law even allows it on the state level. Board discussed the December Holiday Luncheon and maybe doing an Adopt A Family in need here in the community. Board also discussed HB 555 the changes in the state report card and the need to express concerns to our State Representative Mike Dovilla on it. The board had a brief Executive Secession to discuss personnel. The Board also reviewed the November Regular Meeting agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

City of North Royalton Holiday Food Box Program
North Royalton Holiday Food Box Program sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and the Office on Aging is seeking donations of non-perishable food for its Thanksgiving and Christmas distribution to needy families within our city. They are accepting donations of food Monday-Friday from 8:30 am–3:30pm at our Office on Aging on a daily basis, but if you have large boxes of non-perishable items, please call us so we can arrange a drop-off directly at our food bank. The Christmas distribution of food and gifts is on December 15, 2012. At this time they are trying to give out presents to the children of our community. One group which they need help with is the teenagers who are difficult to buy for when it comes to clothes (their first request), music, or games. Gift cards to places such as Wal-Mart,Target or JCPenney are always appreciated by the teens. One other program they administer at Christmas is the Adopt- A- Family in which special families in need are adopted by other residents or service groups in the community. They match up the need with the individuals or groups as we are aware of the ages and special requests by the parents or children. Please call the office at 440-582-6333 and ask to speak with either Judy or Debbie, if you would like to donate to the program or if you are in need of food and wish to apply for the program. The deadline for the Thanksgiving application is Friday, November 9th. Last year they had parents in need of winter coats and boots for their children. They would like to plan ahead before the cold weather arrives, so please call them now, so they can try to meet this need in a timely manner.
