SINCE MY LAST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

The School Board met on September 6th for a Board Work Session. Board got an update on how the start of the 2012-2013 school year went and things seem to be off to a great start for the new school year. The Board also got another update on the Bond Issue for the November Ballot. The board had discussion about the substitute teacher pay rates compared to other districts in the area. Board was given update on the progress of preparing for the new state required teacher and principal evaluation process. Pupil Services Director Susan Welch gave a presentation to the Board on what the school district Wellness Committee is doing to increase bullying prevention in the district and made a recommendation to the board about doing a more unified program called a Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. This program would help meet a district strategic plan goal for student achievement. The Board held an Executive Session for the purpose to discuss the employment of personnel and matters required to be kept confidential by federal law or rules or state statues. The Board also reviewed the September Regular Meeting agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

The School Board met on September 10th for its’ September Regular Board Meeting. Some highlights from the meeting. Board discussed other such matters that came before the Board. The Board recognized NRHS 9th Grader Matthew Marencik for achievement of the rank of Life Scout and for building a storage cabinet for Mrs. Braille’s classroom at Royal View Elementary School. Board approved authorizing the Treasurer to request advances on 2013 tax settlements. The Board approved an appropriations adjustment from the Auxiliary Service Fund for 2012-2013 and approved change funds for the Middle School Activity Book Store. The Board approved the adoption of textbooks for the 2012-2013 school year for AP Statistics. Board recognized Barbara Dwyer on her retirement and years of service to the school district. Board also approved various appointments for certificated/licensed and classified employees. The Board also approved other such matters that came before the Board.

On September 14th participated in the Pre-Game presentation to dedicate the new flag pole and memorial garden at Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium to honor all US Military Veterans and first responders. Special thanks to all those donated money and time to make this happen! As a US Army Veteran it was an honor to be there for this dedication! Also congrats to the NRHS Bears Football team on beating Solon! They are now 3-0 on the season. Go BEARS!

Where do Candidates for State Representative & Senate Stand on School Funding?

In this past weeks Plain Dealer there was a great editorial titled “School funding needs a boost”. The article cited some very interesting findings done by the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities which found 35 of the 48 states they surveyed are providing less per-student funding for K-12 education in the current 2013 fiscal year than they did in fiscal year 2008. In Ohio, school funding dropped 7.9% over the last five years. Yet for the current fiscal year, Ohio ranked sixth in the severity of cuts to its schools having cut $152 per student on average. This article truly highlights how important the upcoming General Election is on the state level especially here in Ohio. So if you have a candidate for State Representative or State Senator come to your door or get contacted from their campaigns please ask them where they stand on public education and improving school funding in our state? Do they have a plan to restore funding that has been lost over the course of the last 2 years especially? Just in case you don’t know who is running here is a list of the candidates that you will see on the November ballot:

24th Ohio Senate District

Tom Patton

Jennifer Brady

6th Ohio House District (Broadview Heights part of our school district only)

Anthony Fossaceca

Marlene Anielski

7th Ohio House District (North Royalton part of our school district only)

Mike Dovilla

Matt Patten

Bond Issue Update

If you go to www.northroyaltonsd.org  and open the “Bearly a Minute” window you can see various video responses to questions relating to the bond issue that are being done. A whole series of these short answers are planned to address some of the questions many of you may have.

Here is a link to some information from the Shape Our Kids Future Committee: http://www.northroyaltonsd.org/public/files/ShapingFuture.pdf

And for those of you who wanted the website for the Shape Our Kids Future Committee it can be found at: http://nrkidsfuture.com/

Many of you have been asking about my position on the bond issue or about various aspects of it. You can find my statements regarding the upcoming bond issue that I have given on the record on my website at www.danlangshaw.com or click on the links below
